It goes back to some of the last words Jesus said to his disciples, when he told them… “go and make disciples baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And sure I am with you always to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20) However, it goes back even further than that, back to the Jordan River when Jesus walked into the waters to be baptized by his cousin John. Who should be baptized?
All believers and followers of Jesus should be baptized. In Matthew 28:19 Jesus said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
How does Greenford Christian Church perform baptisms?
We practice baptism by immersion in water, symbolizing the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. The word baptism (Greek: Baptizo) means to dip or submerge, and this was the practice of the early church.
When should we be baptized?
A person should be baptized at the time he or she has decided to follow Jesus. Baptism is not just a memorial to faith, but a covenant with Christ. It is transformative, marking the place and time a person made a commitment to Christ (Romans 6:1-8). The scriptures teach that we are saved by grace and faith (Ephesians 2:8) and baptism is the first expression of faith. At Greenford Christian Church we ask that a person be baptized at the point he or she is ready to make a commitment to Christ. If a person has been a believer for any length of time and has never taken this step, we encourage them to do so upon recognizing the need to be baptized.
What happens when I’m baptized?
In the act of baptism (immersion), our sins are forgiven (washed away) and we are given a seal of ownership by God, which is the Holy Spirit, who takes up residency in our heart and life. (2 Corinthians 1:21-22; Acts 2:38)
What about children?
We believe that baptism is meant to take place at a time when an individual makes a personal decision to follow Christ and is old enough to repent of their sins and confess Jesus publicly. Therefore, we do not include infant baptism as part of our worship here at Greenford Christian Church.
Some people think that if a child dies before being baptized he will not go to heaven. We have confidence in a loving God who welcomes the little children. Jesus said in Matthew 19:14 “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these…” However, we believe your involvement in our baby Dedication Celebration is massively important. As parents, you are pledging to God and our church family that you are serious about the task of raising your child in a Christian environment with a strong Christian influence. As a church, our aim is to join with you in this dedication and equip you, as we work together to build spiritually-healthy homes.
Should a person be re-baptized?
The scriptures imply that baptism was intended to be a one-time experience for the believer. Re-baptism is encouraged for those who lack confidence in their initial baptism experience. This could be because he or she doesn’t remember it from their infancy, because they were coerced or because their hearts weren’t right with God at the time.
Where should a person be baptized?
In any body of water! We have a baptistry here at Greenford Christian Church, but we have also performed them in pools, rivers and even hot tubs. If God is leading you to be baptized, we would be happy to help you take that step.
- During a Worship Service: This is such a blessing for everyone! Baptisms are scheduled during all of the weekend worship services upon request.
- Following a Worship Service: If you prefer to have a more intimate baptism experience, you can be baptized after the 9:00am or 10:30am services on Sunday.
- Weeknight at Greenford Christian Church: Occasionally we schedule baptisms during the week if this better fits your schedule.
